Can you walk in and find an open table at Izakaya Tamaru? In one month of trying after 10pm, no. But if you are lucky, you may be able to find a seat at the bar. And if you do, a sashimi-slice of Japanese Heaven awaits you. You'll find dishes like...
the Tamaru sashimi sampler;
tender, oyster croquets large enough to fill your palm;
and condensed cream balls for desert.
If you are lucky, maybe an ajumma will wander in from the street. She's one of those wandering vendors that people tend to shoo away. But don't shoo this one away. She has delicious, homemade, sticky rice cakes.
Add a carton of sake, and potato croquets the size of baseballs, and between three people the price comes to ₩30,000 a person. That's not cheap, but the quality and service make up for it. The condensed cream desert and a plate of beef sushi were given on the house.
Izakaya Tamaru can be found on the road leading up to Pyeongtaek Stadium. It is a short walk down the road from its older, larger rival, Iseya Izakaya. Izakayas are the Japanese's upscale equivalent of Korean Hofs. They are places to drink, but with food, so come at dinner time.
